Material You New Tab

Privacy policy

Effective

Material You New Tab is a Chrome extension that replaces your new tab page with a Material You dashboard. This policy explains what information the extension uses, why it uses it, and the choices you have. It applies to the Material You New Tab extension and this website.

The short version

  • Your settings, shortcuts, and to-do items are stored only in your browser.
  • If the weather widget is on, your approximate location is sent to the weather service to get local conditions. We never receive it.
  • There are no accounts, analytics, ads, or tracking, and your data is never sold or used for anything else.

Information stored on your device

Material You New Tab uses Chrome’s extension storage to remember:

  • Your theme, color, clock, and layout preferences
  • The shortcuts you add to the page
  • Your to-do items
  • Your focus timer settings and the state of a running session
  • Any background image you choose to upload

This information is saved in your browser’s local extension storage. It is not sent to us or to anyone else, and we have no way to see it.

Location and weather

When the weather widget is on, Material You New Tab asks Chrome for your location so it can show local conditions. Your coordinates are sent over a secure (HTTPS) connection directly from your browser to our weather provider, Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com), for the sole purpose of getting the weather where you are. The latest weather result may be saved on your device for a short time so the extension doesn’t need to request it on every new tab.

We never receive, store, or log your location. Like any web service, the weather provider receives your request and IP address and handles them under its own terms and privacy policy.

If you turn off the weather widget or block location access for the extension, no location is requested or sent.

When you type in the search bar and press Enter, your search is sent to your search engine to show the results, exactly as if you had searched from Chrome’s address bar. Material You New Tab does not store, log, or read your searches. Your search engine’s own privacy policy applies to them.

Shortcut icons

Material You New Tab shows each shortcut’s icon using Chrome’s built-in icon cache. This does not give the extension access to your browsing history, and no icon data leaves your device.

Focus timer and notifications

The focus timer uses Chrome alarms so a session keeps counting when the new tab is closed, and a notification to tell you when a session ends. Both run entirely on your device.

What Material You New Tab does not collect

  • Your name, email address, or any other personal identifier
  • Your browsing history or the content of the pages you visit
  • Your clicks, keystrokes, or other activity
  • Passwords, payment details, health information, or messages

The extension contains no analytics, advertising, cookies, or tracking code, and it does not run any code on the websites you visit. All of its code is included in the extension package; none is downloaded from elsewhere.

Sharing and sale of data

We do not sell, rent, or transfer your data to anyone. The only information that leaves your device is your approximate location, sent to the weather provider, and your searches, sent to your search engine. Both happen only when you use those features and only to provide them.

The use of information received by Material You New Tab adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Uninstalling Material You New Tab removes everything it has stored in your browser. Because we don’t hold any of your data, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.

Material You New Tab is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. If a change affects what data the extension uses, it will also be noted in the extension’s release notes before it takes effect.
